Frequently Asked Questions

Which dance styles does PLBD teach?

We primarily teach International Standard and International Latin styles of ballroom dancing. International Standard consists of the five dances waltz, tango, Viennese waltz, foxtrot, and quickstep. International Latin consists of the five dances cha-cha, samba, rumba, paso doble, and jive.

What is DanceSport?

DanceSport is the curriculum we use to teach our lessons. It outlines the techniques and steps for each level (Newcomer, Bronze, Silver, and Gold), and is the standard rulebook used for competitions. When we say we teach DanceSport, it means our lessons follow competition guidelines.

What is the difference between DanceSport and social dancing?

While DanceSport is focused more on technique and what steps are allowed during competition, social dancing aims to provide dancers with general steps that can be used in any dancing event such as balls. Social dancing lessons may teach you a larger variety of steps with less technique, whereas Dancesport lessons will teach a smaller range of steps in greater depth.

When are tryouts for the DanceSport team and social dancing?

We do not hold tryouts. We believe that anyone can dance and hence we foster a welcoming environment. If you still have questions, please contact us for more info.

Can I join the team if I am a graduate student / postdoc / medical resident?

Yes, we welcome everyone affiliated with Penn to join us. Current Penn students get a special discount – see below for pricing.

Can I join the team in the Spring semester?

Yes, we welcome you to join us at the beginning of each semester! Look out for information about bootcamps, free lessons, and how to join the team during the first couple weeks of each semester.

How much does it cost?

For the Fall 2025 semester, team dues are $60 per semester for Penn undergraduate students, $80 per semester for graduate students, and $100 per semester for all others. We offer a $10 discount if you pay your dues before the early-bird deadline, September 15th. We also have an additional $10 discount for undergraduate students who are learning ballroom dancing for the first time!

These discounts can be stacked! For example, if you’re a newcomer undergrad and you pay your dues before the early-bird deadline (September 15th), you’d only pay $40!
